I took Andy to see Henry Golde speak tonight. He wrote Ragdolls - a book about his experience in the Holocaust. He was 11 when he was sent to the first concentration camp and 16 when he was liberated. We bought the book and had it signed by him. Andy wants to read it first.
He was fascinating to hear speak. You could hear a pin drop during his presentation. He talked for an hour and said that he could talk for three days and still not tell everything he had seen.
I wanted Andy to be in the room with someone who was there. If we waited, the survivors will have past on.We decided that Beth was too young - we were explaining the war and she just didn't get it. Andy learned about WWII last year, so he had a basis of understanding. I think it accomplished what I wanted -Andy will always associate the stories of the Holocaust to a real person and understand that it was more than a story.
